Every photo you take contains more than an image. Alongside the pixels, your camera or phone quietly embeds a set of hidden data called metadata. Most people never see it, but anyone who receives the photo can.
Here’s what it is, why it matters, and how to remove it before you share anything.
What is photo metadata?
Metadata is information stored inside the image file itself. The most common type is called EXIF data (Exchangeable Image File Format), and it typically includes:
- GPS coordinates — the exact location where the photo was taken, often accurate to within a few meters
- Timestamp — the date and time the photo was taken
- Device information — the make and model of your phone or camera
- Camera settings — aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length
- Software — the app or editing tool used to process the image
A photo of your house taken on your phone and sent to someone contains your home address, the date you were there, and what phone you use. All of it is embedded in the file.
When does metadata become a privacy risk?
For most everyday photos, metadata is harmless. But there are situations where it matters:
Sharing your location without meaning to. If you photograph something at home and post it publicly, the GPS data in the file can reveal exactly where you live. This is a known risk for people who sell items online, journalists protecting a source’s location, or anyone who doesn’t want their home address findable.
Revealing a device you’re trying to keep private. In some situations, the make and model of your phone or camera is information you’d rather not share.
Aggregating data over time. A series of photos shared publicly can reveal patterns — where you live, work, eat, and travel — even if each individual photo seems harmless.
Work files and confidentiality. Photos taken for professional use sometimes contain metadata that shouldn’t leave the organisation.
Does sharing to social media strip metadata?
Most major platforms — Instagram, Facebook, Twitter/X — strip EXIF data when you upload. But not all platforms do, and not all sharing methods go through a platform. Sending a photo by email, text, AirDrop, or direct file transfer usually preserves all the original metadata.
If you’re sharing directly rather than through a platform, assume the metadata travels with it.
How to remove metadata from photos

Option 3: Use a dedicated desktop tool
On Windows, you can right-click an image, go to Properties, then the Details tab, and click “Remove Properties and Personal Information.” This strips specific EXIF fields without re-processing the image.
On Mac, apps like Preview don’t expose EXIF editing directly, but third-party tools like ImageOptim can strip metadata.
